Companion Workshop – Mr Porter Amsterdam

Yesterday afternoon I got to try some Bacardi cocktails by Anya Montague at Mr Porter in the W hotel in Amsterdam. Anya is the assistant bar manager there and she is competing at the Bacardy Legacy bartending competition. At only 23 years of age, she has already lived in 8 different countries where she has worked as a bar consultant. A very opposite direction than she had planned, since she was studying to be a primary school teacher. If you don’t find her at the bar, she will most likely be in the kitchen experimenting with syrups and infusions for her next creations.

She made us lemon daiquiris as she introduced herself. A fresh, not overly sweet drink, made with fresh ingredients. Then she made us the Hemingway daiquiri. A drink sweetened with maraschino liqueur which contrasts nicely against the tart grapefruit juice.  Finally, she introduced us to her signature cocktail, the companion. Following the story of Hemingway; this drink is inspired by Hemingway’s wives, his companions over the years.

The companion is made with Bacardi Carta Blanca, vermouth, pear puree, lime juice, honey and black pepper. An inviting and very accessible cocktail, which you can order at the Bar of Mr Porter (Tip: it has a nice view of the city). And no event is complete without a goodie bag. Anya was kind enough to make us all a little kit to make two companions at home. I made the one in the first picture and I’m excited to make the last one for my hubby. Those white chocolate you see in the picture are the companion cocktail in chocolate form. A delicious treat, part of a collaboration Anya had with Solid Cocktails.

You can follow Anya’s journey through her Instagram account the @travellingbartenders and her Facebook page Companion – Bacardi Legacy.

Genius Gluten Free Bread

Yesterday I got invited to a lunch at the botanical garden Hortus Botanicus in Amsterdam by Genius. Genius is a brand that produces gluten free food. It was created by Lucinda Bruce-Gardyne, whose son is gluten intolerant. She wanted to create bread without gluten that tasted as good as any sandwich bread. And she succeeded.

I like experimenting with different flours to create gluten free recipes. But this was the first time I tried gluten free bread and I was quite impressed. I first tried their triple seeded bread. The texture was soft like any sandwich bread, and the flavor was good as well.

It was a very interesting lunch, learning of the challenges to make gluten free bread and how you need the right mixture of starches and fibers to create a bread that tastes, feels and looks like it has gluten.

The first picture was my breakfast today. Toasted Genius brown bread with goat cheese, avocado, a poached egg, chili flakes and Himalayan pink salt. And a slice of toasted Genius Fruit loaf with goat cheese, strawberries, blueberries and an edible flower.

In the Netherlands, you can find the Genius products at the bakery section of the Albert Heijn.

Gin & Tonic Sorbet in Amsterdam

Mister Cocktail and Metropolitan Deli have developed 5 different combinations of gin & tonic sorbets. I was very excited when I got invited to taste them last Tuesday. I mean, a cocktail in dessert form! Who doesn’t like that? They are made with 5 different kinds of gin: Mombasa, Bobby’s, Sloane’s, Gin Mare and Sipsmith, and different kinds of Fever –Tree tonic. A real adult treat. They are very smooth on the palate. You can taste the alcohol as if you were having a drink. My favorite was the one with Mombasa gin. You can get a scoop or two at Metropolitan Deli in Amsterdam. They are open every day from 9 till 1:00 am.

Mussels, Bubbles & Prawns Night by Chef and the City

Chef and the city hosted a Mussels, Bubbles & Prawns night yesterday. It was an evening full of unlimited prawns, mussels and homemade fries. The event took place at Room 66, which used to be a small restaurant. The location matched perfectly with the concept. Small and cozy, where you could just serve yourself and have a casual evening with friends.  We were welcomed with fresh oysters and cocktails. Not a bad way to start a Thursday night, if you ask me.

As the theme was unlimited food, it just kept on coming. The nice smell was impossible to pass, as I couldn’t help myself and had another serving every time a new platter full of freshly made mussels would arrive at the bar.

Chef and the city is an interactive catering company owned by Aleksandra Polski, where if you choose to, you can also learn new culinary skills such as making sushi or decorating cupcakes. She will most likely be hosting similar events like the Mussels, Bubbles & Prawns night. You can check her Facebook page to keep up to date for future events.

Happy Friday guys!

Waterfront Chill & Groove (beats & bites)

FullSizeRender (5)

This past weekend was the Waterfront Chill & Groove culinary event at the Restaurant Het Bosch located in Amsterdam. The location of the restaurant is beautiful, close to the Amsterdam Forest and by the water. The restaurant was renovated a few years ago and their Waterfront area is open on the weekends during the summer months. I attended the event on Friday with some fellow bloggers. We started the night with some nice bubbly. We were incredibly lucky with the weather as it was very pleasant to be outside till late at night.

There were two open kitchens. One with the crew from Het Bosch and the other one, ran by Julius Jaspers. Beautiful food and great live music. We finished the evening by drinking some gin tonics. A great way to spend a Friday night!

Markthal Rotterdam

This is a new indoor food market that just opened in Rotterdam. Here you can find fresh produce stands, food shops and restaurants. It also has an Asian supermarket. It is a nice place to get lots of different bites to eat. I really liked the lemon cannoli, the pork bun, dried mini sausages in a cone and mini donuts.  It is open everyday.
