Food Photography Background Tutorial + First Vlog

A long time ago, I used to have a tutorial here on how to make a food photography background but I decided to erase it since the quality of the video wasn’t very good. I’ve been wanting to make a proper one since then. So I decided to include it on my first vlog. I thought of  showing you guys a bit more of my daily life, from events to restaurants, to some cooking and traveling. On this one we went zip lining in the Hague, tried some new restaurants and visited the blue forest in Belgium.

So if you would like to see/know anything in particular, do let me know.

I often get asked where do I get my props. I often get them online, at little shops or sometimes at flee markets. I recently found a nice online shop from the States called Eating Tools that sells cooking and eating utensils. They are all handcrafted by different artisans all around the world, so each piece is quite unique. I got the copper bowl and titanium chopsticks in the picture above from that shop. You can find the recipe for the cucumber noodles with miso roasted salmon here.

SNCKBR, the healthy all day cafe, now has a new location at the Kinkerstraat in Amsterdam West. I was invited to a dinner tasting, while they were still doing the final touches on the new location, hence all the tools in the background. The food they serve is really good and they have a good variety of vegetarian and some vegan options too. So it is definitely worth a stop if you are in the neighborhood. It was too dark to take a decent picture of everything that we ate, but if you follow my Instagram stories, you’ve probably already seen it.

Last week I also went to a beauty event organized by Elle magazine and Yves Saint Laurent. It was to celebrate the launch of their new lipstick Vernis a Lèvres Vinyl Cream. So we got some tips from make up artists and got to try on some of their products. It was a fun girly afternoon with my friend Rosanna. And of course, no event is complete without a goody bag. I’m a big fan of the lipstick, it is very easy to apply and doesn’t dry my lips.

Last Tuesday I went to an early morning tasting at Frozz. I love their frozen yogurt and this time I got to try their dairy free versions. My favorite was their coconut frozen yogurt. It was really delicious and incredible creamy. I was sitting next to the daughter of the owner and it was really nice to hear how passionate they are about the quality of their products and creating new recipes.

On Saturday we went to Gouda to look for antique furniture but we had no luck. So we decided to make a pit stop in The Hague before going back home.

We got a bite to eat and went to the Pier to visit my husband´s old friends, who work at the Bungy Jump. This time we didn’t jump but it is a lot of fun if you are ever in Scheveningen. The picture below is a throwback when I jumped with a a dear friend of mine who came to visit from Peru.

On Sunday we went to get ice cream cookie sandwiches at Sillers (First picture). I had been wanting to stop by ever since a friend told me about it a few weeks ago. They were delicious and the girl working there was super nice, especially since I was a bit indecisive with what combination to get. They have different kinds of cookies and ice creams to choose from, as they assemble it in front of you.

Last year I went on G’s Brunch boat with some family and had a great time eating poached eggs & drinking cocktails while cruising the Amsterdam canals. So when I got an invite to come last Tuesday, of course I said yes.

The weather could have not been better either, so I just enjoyed a delicious bloody Mary and some pink lemonade while catching up with some friends. It is a really nice activity, especially if you are visiting Amsterdam.

The boat sails on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 10:00, 12:00 & 14:00. You can check out their website to make a reservation.

On Wednesday I met some friends for cocktails at the Vault Bar at the Waldorf Astoria. Their menu consists of very unique cocktails. You can check more about it on this blog post.

If you follow me on social media, you’ve probably already seen a video I posted of going to the Febo factory and a gym photoshoot. I never got to explain properly what it was. Febo is very famous here for their snack bars and their Dutch croquettes. My friend Paultje, who is a health blogger and model coach from My Model Workout and Lavinia from Lavinia cooks organized the event. He wanted to make a point in having a good balance, that you can lead a healthy lifestyle without depriving yourself. Hence the fast food shots while working out. It was a really cool event and we all had so much fun. You can see the article he wrote plus all the pictures here. And you can check my video here.

It has been crazy lately with work and the renovation of our new apartment. Our weekends mean at least one trip to the hardware store. We still need to paint and place the new floors. Not to mention that we also need to start packing since we need to leave our rental apartment at the end of the month. That’s something I am not really looking forward to and have been postponing since the beginning of the month.

On Tuesday I attended a cake workshop at the Grand Café Krasnapolsky. We were divided into 3 groups and we each made a different dessert. At the end, we were treated to a sweet feast. They placed so many desserts along the marble table we were working on before. A dream for anyone with a sweet tooth!

It was so much fun. And I also got to take some cheesecake back home. It had been a long time since I wore a chef’s coat. I was just looking at my old Paul Bocuse album from the time I was in France in 2006. I can’t believe it was 10 years ago already!

I created a new chocolate recipe for a port campaign. The picture below was the aftermath of the shoot. You can check out the recipe by clicking here.

We had such nice weather on Sunday that we decided to just wander around the city in our bikes. We spotted the Amsterdam flag in the background and I just had to stop to take a picture.

24Kitchen Summer for Food Lovers

IMG_8269

One of the things I love about summer is being outside. After months of cold weather, suddenly everyone is at a terrace or at a park. Last week I attended a gorgeous and very healthy 24Kitchen picnic at Vondelpark. It was the perfect set up. Large cushions on the grass, a long table and lots of dishes and juices to share. It was a lovely afternoon with the perfect weather!

Last Tuesday I attended a picnic at NEST, the new roof terrace of Hotel Casa 400. It was cold and rainy that afternoon but we made the best out of it. We got a tour of their edible garden and got a taste of their delicious menu. It has a great view of the city. So if weather permits, it is worth a visit!

In the evening, I went to the launch of the Food Network at the College Hotel. If you have Ziggo, you will be able to enjoy it starting in July. I miss those kinds of cooking shows I used to watch when I lived in the States. Maybe it’s time for me to change TV providers!

On Wednesday, I took over Broste Copenhagen’s Instagram account. It is a brand that offers many gorgeous items for the home. It is one of my favorite interior brands and I have been using their tableware for a while now.

On Thursday, I got up very early to get a tour of the Febo factory. We learned how the typical Dutch croquettes are made and how fresh all of their ingredients are. Later we had a guilty pleasures photo shoot with food from Febo as props (and our lunch). You can see the video underneath.

In the evening, I went to try the new menu of restaurant Anna in the red light district. It was such a delightful evening! You can see the whole review here.

The weekend was reserved to work on our new apartment, search for a floor and a bit of time for ourselves. We biked around the city for a bit since it was such a nice day (first picture).

De Proefparade Food of 2016

IMG_1507

This food press event took place last Sunday at the beautiful Andaz hotel. It was an interactive event where many brands where presenting their products and it was organized by Mister Experience Creators.

IMG_1609

And of course since it was about food, it was filled with tastings. It was my first time attending this event and I really enjoyed it. My favorite stand was the one with the Nittaya Thai Red Curry Paste which I am looking forward to try at home. There was a fun Alpro stand where you could make your own smoothie. I tasted alcohol free wine by Barrels and Drums, delicious farmer’s cheese by Passie & Trots and activated nuts by Raw organic foods. It was the first time I’ve ever heard about activated nuts and they tasted better. They are less bitter and crunchier. And they are supposed to be healthier and easier to digest. It was a lovely event filled with foodies.

Boretti Valentine’s Lunch

FullSizeRender

Last Friday I was invited to a Valentine’s day lunch at the Boretti showroom. I was very excited to go considering my kitchen is practically my office. And since we recently bought an apartment here in Amsterdam but we won’t receive it till June, we are busy looking and planning how we are going to remodel it and fill it up. As it was for Valentine’s, I could bring my husband. We arrived at the showroom which was not far from Amsterdam and I immediately felt like a kid in a candy shop. While I was going gaga over the kitchen stoves, ovens and fridges; my hubby was going gaga over the BBQs.

FullSizeRender (2)

The lunch was divided into two groups, one group helped make the appetizers while the other was given a tour of the showroom. We were the first group to be given the tour. Boretti is known for their kitchen stoves which come in a gorgeous range of colors and styles. Lately their BBQs have become quite popular. They are big, American style BBQs. One even comes with a mini fridge. A dream for anyone who likes to cook outdoors. They also make coffee machines, induction cooktops which are getting more popular nowadays and wine coolers. They also produce the M-system line which is more affordable and is produced in the same factory. After buying a Boretti product you can visit this showroom where they can provide you with extra information or instructions on how to use and take care of your product.

After the tour was done, it was our turn to help prepare the next course. Chef Ben Van Beurten made some delicious pasta and salmon. He was telling us how his preference for cooking goes to the induction cooktops because it’s faster to cook with them and it’s easier to control the heat. After we ate, we learned a bit about latte art. This is something we were very excited about since we’ve been trying it at home with no luck. We actually made hearts and we were quite proud of ourselves. At home however is another story, we just need to practice more.

Companion Workshop – Mr Porter Amsterdam

IMG_9597

FullSizeRender (1)

Yesterday afternoon I got to try some Bacardi cocktails by Anya Montague at Mr Porter in the W hotel in Amsterdam. Anya is the assistant bar manager there and she is competing at the Bacardy Legacy bartending competition. At only 23 years of age, she has already lived in 8 different countries where she has worked as a bar consultant. A very opposite direction than she had planned, since she was studying to be a primary school teacher. If you don’t find her at the bar, she will most likely be in the kitchen experimenting with syrups and infusions for her next creations.

FullSizeRender (1)

She made us lemon daiquiris as she introduced herself. A fresh, not overly sweet drink, made with fresh ingredients. Then she made us the Hemingway daiquiri. A drink sweetened with maraschino liqueur which contrasts nicely against the tart grapefruit juice.  Finally, she introduced us to her signature cocktail, the companion. Following the story of Hemingway; this drink is inspired by Hemingway’s wives, his companions over the years.

Companion

The companion is made with Bacardi Carta Blanca, vermouth, pear puree, lime juice, honey and black pepper. An inviting and very accessible cocktail, which you can order at the Bar of Mr Porter (Tip: it has a nice view of the city). And no event is complete without a goodie bag. Anya was kind enough to make us all a little kit to make two companions at home. I made the one in the first picture and I’m excited to make the last one for my hubby. Those white chocolate you see in the picture are the companion cocktail in chocolate form. A delicious treat, part of a collaboration Anya had with Solid Cocktails.
